Intro to Botox
Botox has many great benefits - can change and improve your physical appearance and wellbeing for the better. Whether you have cosmetic or medical concerns, Botox can be the solution for you.
So what is Botox?
Botox is a non-surgical FDA-approved injectable treatment that temporarily relaxes facial muscles and wrinkles. Botox injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. By preventing the contraction of these specific muscles, there is less action or pull on the skin and a decrease in the formation of wrinkles.
The procedure itself only takes a few minutes. Your injector will discuss your goals and depending on the area of treatment recommend a number of units for the procedure for the best results. The injections will be performed with a small syringe in various areas to target the desired muscle.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox can last on average between 3-4 months. There will certainly be patients in which it lasts longer, in that 4-6 month range, or shorter, in that 2-month range. It is also common for first-timers to notice that it may not last as long initially but last longer after the second treatment.
What does Botox treat?
Although the most common areas of treatment with Botox are forehead wrinkles, crow's feet lines around the eyes, and Vertical '11' lines between eyebrows, Botox can help with many other areas and conditions. Here are some other common treatments Botox is used for (and some surprising ones):
Joint pain and TMJ
Excessive underarm sweating
Severe migraines
Crossed Eye correction
Bladder control
Muscle tension relief
Botox is no longer associated with just the famous and elite. A study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that Botox injections became the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedure in 2020, with 4.4 million procedures performed last year. Botox is a safe and effective treatment for a temporary decrease in the appearance of wrinkles and other conditions.
