New Year, Happy You
As we begin the new year and think through our resolutions, one goal that should always be at the top of our list of priorities is our mental health. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is the cause of how we feel, act and think. It also affects how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.
The balance of taking care of both our bodies and minds is key for achieving optimal health and wellness. Physical and mental health depend on each other. According to the CDC, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.
Along with personal matters, in each of our lives, that can contribute to mental health strain, many would agree that the last couple of years have especially been trying for everyone, for multiple reasons. It’s important we make sure to check in with ourselves daily and nourish our mental and emotional state, as well as our physical health. Talking to friends and family, going for a walk, spending time with your pets and decreasing screen time are all great activities to decrease stress and mental health strain. Additionally, speaking to a professional therapist can be a great way to discuss your needs and get help with anything you’re facing.
